A well-meaning employer tried to make small talk with her maid in the car whilst on a weekend outing to the mall.
Employer: Yuni, wang kamu tak mau kirim kampung ke?
Maid: Nggak mau lagi. Tapi mau beli henpon, boleh?
Employer: Tak boleh...
Maid: Saya cuma mau sms...
Employer: (no response)
End of conversation.
In my head: Who does she want to sms? Does she have a boyfriend? What has she been doing when the girls and I are out during the day? Bla bla bla bla...
Scary.
Maybe I am over-reacting with the thoughts in my head. I hope I am.
But was I being unreasonable for denying her the handphone? I think not. Why would she need a handphone when I let her call home (with my supervision) once a month. It was her who told me once that she doesn't like to call her family too often as it would make her think of home more. So why the handphone now?

do NOT let her buy a handphone! You did the right thing. My cousin in law relented and her maid started joining those sms a partner programs they have on the TV and ended having 50 over 'boyfriends' phone numbers in her phone list!

i nk share pengalaman i baru2 ni. Maid i bawak sendiri hp dari Indon supaya dia senang ctc hubby & anak2 dia. I pada mula mmg x suka tapi i fikir kalo i berkasar sgt dia akan lari. But u knw what, dia baru je lari 2 minggu lepas sebab x blh kene tegur. I tau dia ada kawan yang tak ada permit keje kt sini. Hampeh betul! U buat bende yang betul. Jangan sesekali bagi muka kt maid, diaorg ni x pandai kenang budi (dari apa yg i dah lalui).
